Chinese Court Hands 11-Year Sentence to Crypto Scammer
In a significant move to combat cryptocurrency fraud, a Chinese court has sentenced an online scammer to 11 years in prison for misrepresenting tokens in a sale. The verdict, handed down by a Guangdong court, serves as a stark warning to both online miscreants and investors about the risks and consequences of such activities.
The accused, identified as Xie, was found guilty of defrauding an investor, Wu, out of CNY 990,000 ($6,637) by misrepresenting AA tokens as famous AA China tokens. Xie received the payment but only transferred a portion of the agreed tokens, with the rest being locked as non-tradeable. Despite Wu's repeated requests for a solution or refund, Xie failed to respond and cut off contact, leading to a complaint being filed.
The Shenzhen Futian District Court found Xie guilty of fraud and sentenced him to 11 years in prison, along with a fine of CNY 50,000 (~$7,000). The verdict serves as a strong deterrent for potential fraudsters and emphasizes China's commitment to cracking down on crypto-related crimes.
In addition to the AA token verdict, China has been making significant strides in curbing crypto-related crimes. In a separate case, the country cracked down on a money laundering network that processed close to CNY 1 billion ($136 million) in crypto transactions. The investigation led to the identification of three suspects across different provinces, with high-value goods and digital assets being seized during raids.
Chinese laws differentiate between fraud and illegal fundraising based on the severity of the crime and its impact on the financial system. Fraud typically involves one individual being misled, while illegal fundraising affects a broader group. Perpetrators of crypto-related financial crimes can face hefty fines and incarceration of up to 11 years, as demonstrated in the AA token fraud case.
To counter crypto crimes, the Chinese government has taken steps to make laws and punishments more stringent. The state has shown a renewed commitment to apprehending such criminals, as seen in the recent cases. China's stance on crypto-based crimes can influence other states to introduce stringent regulations and demotivate cyber criminals on a global scale.
