Chinese automakers have overtaken Japanese peers in global sales for the first time in decades, selling about 27 million new vehicles worldwide in 2022, up 10% year-on-year. Toyota retained its global lead with sales of 11.32 million units, while BYD surpassed Ford to rank sixth globally and Geely overtook Honda to place eighth. Six Chinese automakers were among the world's top 20 automakers by sales, compared to five from Japan.
