China's export surge is dampening price gains even as AI demand holds up

China's exports already expanded 19.4% in May, then climbed 27% in June. Imports also accelerated, jumping 36% to a five-year high. That points less to a pure shortage dynamic and more to a market with real demand plus strong shipment capacity.
Reuters linked that momentum to demand for semiconductors and AI-related technology products, alongside front-loading of U.S.-bound shipments and aggressive pricing by Chinese exporters. The message for investors is straightforward: volume can stay strong even if pricing power stays limited. In that setup, companies can grow shipments without earning the same margin expansion the market may expect.
The bottleneck is more narrowly located in HBM and packaging
Demand is still real, but the investable question has shifted. It is no longer just whether AI needs chips; it is where scarcity, and therefore pricing power, is concentrated.
Revenue is clustering in the tightest parts of the stack
The bottleneck is no longer basic wafer scarcity alone. It is increasingly located in higher-value memory and packaging. Omdia expects memory ICs to account for more than 50% of total semiconductor revenue in 2026, with AI demand still straining production and packaging capacity. At the same time, Deloitte notes that AI chips drive about half of total semiconductor revenue while representing less than 0.2% of unit volume.
That combination matters. The biggest dollar gains are concentrated in a small number of complex, hard-to-source components rather than spread evenly across the industry. If HBM and advanced packaging remain constrained, the companies tied to those choke points are better positioned to defend margins than firms selling more commoditized parts.
The bull case depends on scarcity; the bear case depends on concentration
The bullish read is that the winners are not just "chip companies" in general. They are the suppliers that control the steps where supply cannot easily expand. If HBM and packaging tightness persists into 2027, that narrows the opportunity set-but it can also make the best names more durable.
The bearish counter is that the industry has become increasingly dependent on AI. Deloitte warns that the semiconductor industry is effectively leaning on AI-driven demand while automotive, PC, smartphone, and non-data-center communications markets grow more slowly. There is also valuation concentration risk: the top 10 chip companies held about $9.5 trillion of combined market cap by mid-December 2025, with the top three accounting for 80% of that total. If AI demand cools, that narrower leadership structure could reprice quickly.

Rising input costs can hit while finished-goods pricing stays soft
China's latest pricing data is the clearest warning sign. In June, PPI rose 4.1% year over year, but the monthly reading still fell 0.3%. That split suggests the economy is not heating up evenly. Input costs can move one way while finished-goods pricing remains under pressure, which is not an easy environment for suppliers that need pass-through power to protect margins.
Earlier export momentum was helped by sustained global demand for semiconductors and AI-related components. But economists also warned that front-loaded ordering would fade as foreign buyers' stockpiling peaked and input costs rose. That backdrop matters because it can support shipment numbers without giving suppliers meaningful pricing power.
A selective bottleneck trade is different from a broad chip boom
Bulls can still argue that AI demand is concentrated enough to protect the best names, especially where HBM availability can cap shipments. That is a fair argument for the most constrained links in the chain.
The broader caution is simpler. If only a few choke points retain pricing power, then buying the whole semiconductor complex can mean owning a lot of businesses that are still competing on price. If sector growth keeps leaning on AI-driven demand while classic end markets stay mixed to soft, this looks more like a selective winner-take-most trade than a wide pricing boom.

Where the trade has cleaner upside
Size for scarcity, not for every chip name with AI exposure. Industry signals still point to HBM supply constraints and tightness in advanced packaging and node capacity into 2027. That favors direct HBM suppliers, the advanced packaging ecosystem, and the equipment and materials that help those bottlenecks expand.
The offset remains China's trade burst. Recent strength was not purely demand-driven. Reuters said exports climbed 27% ... in June, imports jumped 36%, and the momentum was supported by strong semiconductor and AI-related product demand, front-loading of U.S.-bound shipments, and aggressive pricing by Chinese exporters. Economists also warned that foreign buyers' stockpiling peaks, after which front-loading loses its lift. That mix can keep volume moving even as it limits margin expansion.
