China to boost imports from Sweden, trade envoy Li says

China and Sweden are poised to strengthen their trade ties, following a recent agreement between the two countries to extend their tariff truce. This development comes on the heels of a two-day meeting in Stockholm, where Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led their respective delegations in discussions aimed at maintaining a stable and sound economic relationship.

According to Chinese trade tsar Li Chenggang, who briefed the press following the meeting, both sides agreed to continue the pause on the 24% reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S., as well as China's countermeasures. The talks, described as "in-depth, candid, and constructive," focused on the macroeconomic situations of both countries and the progress made in implementing earlier agreements reached in Geneva and London.

Li Chenggang emphasized the importance of safeguarding a stable and sound China-US trade relationship, noting that both sides are committed to maintaining close communication and timely exchanges on trade and economic topics. He also highlighted that China will continue to push for the stable and sound development of their bilateral trade and economic relationship.

This agreement is significant for Sweden, as it opens up new opportunities for Chinese imports. Li Chenggang indicated that China is looking to boost its imports from Sweden, signaling a potential increase in bilateral trade between the two nations. This move is part of China's broader strategy to diversify its trade relationships and reduce its dependence on the U.S.

The extension of the tariff truce is also a strategic move for China, as it allows the country to focus on other aspects of its economic development while avoiding the potential disruptions that could arise from a resumption of tariffs. This development is particularly notable given the ongoing trade tensions between China and the U.S., which have been a source of volatility in global markets.

As the world's top two economies continue to navigate their trade relationship, this agreement is a positive step towards maintaining stability and promoting economic growth. The extension of the tariff truce is a testament to the ongoing efforts of both countries to find common ground and work towards a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
