China's 5G Users Surge 841.4 Million, Reaching 60.8% of Total

China's telecommunications industry has demonstrated a stable growth trajectory this year, with the number of 5G mobile phone users nearing 11 billion. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of the end of May, the total number of fixed broadband internet access users for the three major basic telecom enterprises reached 6.82 billion, marking a net increase of 121.6 million users compared to the end of last year. The total number of mobile phone users for these enterprises and China Broadcasting reached 18.07 billion, a net increase of 169.9 million users. Notably, the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 10.98 billion, a net increase of 841.4 million users, accounting for 60.8% of the total number of mobile phone users.

The construction and application of new infrastructure networks, such as 5G and gigabit optical networks, have been continuously promoted. As of the end of May, the total number of internet broadband access ports in the country reached 12.32 billion, a net increase of 298.4 million ports. The number of 10G PON ports with gigabit network service capabilities reached 298 million, a net increase of 16 million ports. The total number of 5G base stations reached 4.486 million, a net increase of 235,000 base stations, accounting for 35.3% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the previous four months.

The penetration rate of gigabit and 5G users in various regions has been continuously improving. As of the end of May, the penetration rate of fixed broadband access users with an access rate of 1000Mbps or above in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions increased by 1.8, 1.9, 1.9, and 2.3 percentage points respectively compared to the end of last year. The penetration rate of 5G mobile phone users increased by 3.9, 4.2, 4.4, and 4.7 percentage points respectively compared to the end of last year.

The rapid growth of 5G mobile phone users in China underscores the country's leadership in the field of new generation information and communication technology. Since its commercial launch in 2019, 5G technology has seen widespread adoption, driven by factors such as improved network infrastructure, increased device availability, and growing demand for high-speed connectivity. The high penetration rate of 5G users indicates that the technology is becoming an integral part of daily life for a significant portion of the population. This trend is expected to continue as more regions and users adopt 5G technology, further enhancing the country's digital infrastructure and supporting the development of innovative applications and services.
