The ChatGPT mobile app has cemented its dominance in the AI app market, achieving $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023 [1]. This figure represents a significant milestone, particularly as it dwarfs the combined lifetime spending of its closest competitors, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok, by approximately 30 times. As of January through July 2025, the app has already generated $1.35 billion in revenue, marking a 673 percent year-over-year increase from $174 million in the same period in 2024. On average, it earns roughly $193 million per month, a sharp rise from last year’s monthly average of $25 million [1].
The app’s performance is even more striking when compared to its nearest rival, Grok. ChatGPT’s average monthly consumer spending is about 53 times higher than Grok’s $3.6 million monthly average, with Grok’s year-to-date revenue standing at approximately $25.6 million [1]. These figures highlight ChatGPT’s unparalleled ability to attract and retain paying users. On a per-download basis, ChatGPT’s global users spent an average of $2.91, significantly outpacing the $0.75 spent on Grok and the $0.28 on Copilot. In the U.S., the disparity is even more pronounced, with ChatGPT users spending $10 per download, contributing 38 percent of the app’s total lifetime revenue [1].
Global adoption is equally robust, with ChatGPT having been downloaded an estimated 690 million times worldwide, vastly exceeding Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. The app’s average monthly downloads now stand at 45 million, a 180 percent increase from the 16 million monthly downloads recorded in January through July 2024. India leads by install count, accounting for 13.7 percent of ChatGPT’s lifetime downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3 percent [1].
The app’s rapid growth underscores a broader trend: consumers are increasingly adopting generative AI tools and are willing to pay for premium features. While these figures reflect app store performance, they do not fully capture the total revenue streams of companies like OpenAI, which also earns income from web subscriptions, enterprise plans, and API usage [1]. Nonetheless, mobile app data provides valuable insights into user engagement and spending behavior, particularly in everyday use cases where an intuitive, accessible interface is essential.
The competitive landscape in the mobile AI market is also evident in the timing of product launches. For instance, xAI’s Grok initially launched as an in-app feature on X (formerly Twitter) in November 2023 and was only later released as a standalone iOS app in January 2025 and on Google Play in March 2025. This delayed entry into the dedicated mobile app space likely contributed to Grok’s relatively modest performance compared to ChatGPT [1].
These figures reinforce OpenAI’s early mover advantage and its user-centric innovation, creating a formidable challenge for new entrants in the AI app market. ChatGPT’s ability to scale rapidly and maintain a high level of user satisfaction has set a new standard in the industry, solidifying its position as the leading consumer-facing AI product. As the mobile AI market continues to grow, ChatGPT’s performance suggests that the future of AI is increasingly mobile, and the app is currently setting the pace.
