Since its launch in May 2023, the ChatGPT mobile app has generated nearly $2 billion in global user spending, according to data from Appfigures. This figure far outpaces the combined revenue from competing AI chatbots, including Grok, Copilot, and Claude, which together have earned only 1/30th of ChatGPT’s total spending [1]. The app’s dominance is underscored by its 690 million global installs, with 318 million projected in 2025 alone—2.8 times higher than the same period in 2024 [2].
The app’s financial trajectory has been particularly strong in 2025, with January to July revenue reaching $1.35 billion—up 673% compared to $174 million for the same period in 2024. On average, the app generates around $193 million per month, a notable increase from the roughly $25 million monthly revenue in 2024 [3]. This rapid acceleration reflects a growing reliance on AI tools by everyday users.
Per-install revenue for ChatGPT stands at $2.91 globally, significantly higher than that of its closest competitors, such as Claude ($2.55), Grok ($0.75), and Copilot ($0.28). In the U.S., where it generates 38% of total revenue, the average spending per install is $10, highlighting the app’s strong monetization in key markets [4].
Download trends reinforce its popularity. Monthly downloads have increased by 180% year-over-year, rising from 16 million between January and July 2024 to 45 million in the same period of 2025 [5]. India accounts for 13.7% of all downloads, the highest globally, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%. Germany, meanwhile, is the second-largest market by spending, contributing 5.3% of global user expenditure [6].
Grok, the closest competitor, launched in November 2023 but initially lacked a mobile app, giving it a significant disadvantage. The iOS version of Grok arrived in January 2025, with the Android version following in March [7]. As a result, Grok has struggled to catch up, with year-to-date revenue at just $25.6 million—1.9% of ChatGPT’s total [8].
The app’s success in the mobile space reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior, where AI tools are increasingly integrated into daily life. While corporate subscriptions and API usage also contribute to OpenAI’s revenue, the mobile app’s performance demonstrates strong demand from individual users for AI-powered productivity tools [9].
