Geographically, the U.S. remains the largest revenue generator for the app, contributing 38% of total income. Germany ranks second, with 5.3% of the app’s revenue. The global average cost per install is $2.91, but this rises to $10 in the U.S., indicating a more aggressive marketing and monetization strategy in the region [5].
In contrast, ChatGPT’s closest rival, Grok, has struggled to gain traction. As of July 2025, Grok had generated only $25.6 million in revenue—just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s total user spending. This gap is partially attributed to Grok’s delayed mobile app launch, with its iOS version only becoming available in January 2025 and its Android version in March [5].
Experts attribute ChatGPT’s success to its early entry into the mobile AI space and its effective integration into users' daily routines. The app’s ability to attract a large and active user base, combined with a monetization model that includes subscriptions and in-app purchases, has driven its impressive financial performance [5].
