CFTC and SEC Team Up to Revive Crypto Regulation
The acting chair of the CFTC, Caroline Pham, has revealed that the regulator is working closely with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on crypto-related matters. Pham made this statement during the Milken Institute’s “Future of Fintech Symposium,” as reported by Fox Business’ Eleanor Terrett.
Pham stated, “We have restarted conversations at the staff level between the CFTC and SEC. We would like to work together. We have worked together well in the past and I look forward to getting back to regular order.” This confirmation aligns with earlier reports from February that the CFTC and the SEC were planning a joint effort to address crypto regulation in the US.
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, also known as “Crypto Mom” and head of the regulator’s Crypto TaskTASK-- Force, confirmed Pham’s remarks. The jointJYNT-- effort aims to revive the Joint Advisory Committee, which was created in 2010 to address regulatory concerns shared by both agencies but has been inactive since 2014.
Pham also mentioned that the CFTC is engaging with the White House’s “Crypto Czar,” David Sacks, and the work has been positive. Peirce added that it is beneficial to have an administration that is invested in providing crypto clarity. The Crypto Task Force is working on defining the boundaries of what the SEC should not regulate and is seeking public feedback on rulemaking efforts.
The remarks from Peirce and Pham come amid significant changes in the US crypto regulatory landscape. On February 28, Sacks revealed the White House’s first crypto summit, where President Donald Trump is expected to unveil the US Bitcoin (BTC) reserve strategy. Additionally, the SEC has been concluding lawsuits and investigations, including ending its investigation of Yuga Labs and its lawsuit against Kraken. The regulator has also moved to dismiss lawsuits against CoinbaseCOIN--, Consensys, Robinhood, Uniswap Labs, and Gemini since mid-February.
