CFTC Commissioner Mersinger to Lead Blockchain Association
Commodity Futures Trading Commission commissioner Summer Mersinger is set to take on a new role as the CEO of the Blockchain Association. Her tenure at the CFTC will conclude on May 30, and she will commence her duties at the Blockchain Association on June 2. Marta Belcher, the president of the Blockchain Association's board, expressed enthusiasm about Mersinger's appointment, stating that her leadership will be pivotal for crypto policy and will drive the industry to new heights.
Mersinger, who has been a commissioner at the CFTC since 2022, has been recognized for her pro-crypto stance. In 2024, she issued a dissenting opinion regarding the CFTC's settlement agreement with Uniswap Labs, criticizing the move as "regulation by enforcement." She argued that the settlement made broad statements about the crypto industry and employed legal theories outside of a courtroom setting. In 2023, Mersinger emphasized the need for congressional policy to ensure the existence of crypto in the US, warning that without clarity, innovation and opportunities in financial markets could be lost.
Prior to her nomination to the CFTC by President Biden, Mersinger served as a top aide to current Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Thune recently voted against advancing the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act, citing the need for further review. He also emphasized the importance of stablecoins being made in the US. Kristin Smith, the current CEO of the Blockchain Association, will be leaving the organization on Friday after nearly seven years of leadership. She will join the new Solana Policy Institute as its president later this month.
