Wal-Mart de México's CEO, Ignacio Caride, has abruptly resigned, effective immediately. Cristian Barrientos, current CEO of Walmart Chile, has been appointed interim CEO. Caride took the position in April 2024 and had previously announced a $6,000 million investment creating 5,500 jobs in March.
MEXICO CITY, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Walmart de México SAB de CV, the local unit of the US retailer, has announced the resignation of its CEO, Ignacio Caride, effective immediately. Cristian Barrientos, currently the CEO of Walmart Chile, has been appointed as interim CEO until a permanent successor is found.
Caride assumed the role as CEO in April 2024. In March, he appeared at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference to announce a $6 billion investment that included the creation of 5,500 jobs. Despite this significant investment, the company reported a 10% drop in net profit in its second-quarter results released in July, citing a slower-than-anticipated recovery in consumer spending despite an 8% increase in sales [1].
Barrientos, who previously served as senior vice president of operations for Walmart de México, brings over 26 years of retail experience to his new interim role. He has extensive experience driving expansion, store openings, and digital transformation. Walmart de México operates Walmart, Sam's Club, and Bodega Aurrera stores across six countries, making it Mexico's largest retailer [1].
The abrupt resignation of Caride and the appointment of Barrientos as interim CEO signal a shift in the leadership of Walmart de México. The company's financial performance and strategic direction will be closely watched by investors and industry observers as it navigates the challenges of the retail sector in Mexico and Central America.
