Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has further solidified its foundation for cooperation with U.S. nuclear power companies following the Korea-U.S. summit. The company signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) at the 'Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable' event held at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. on August 25, 2025.
The first MOU was signed with Amazon, a leading U.S. data and cloud service company, X-energy, a developer of next-generation small module reactors (SMR), and Doosan Energy, a supplier of equipment. This agreement focuses on cooperating on SMR projects in the U.S. Based on X-energy's "Xe-100" SMR, the project aims to supply industrial power to data centers in the United States led by Amazon. Amazon is looking to introduce customized SMRs to achieve its clean energy goals and provide stable power. KHNP and X-energy will participate in the entire SMR project cycle, including design, construction, finance, operations (O&M), supply chain evaluation, and business development.
In another significant development, KHNP signed a MOU with Samsung C&T and Fermi America to cooperate in the construction of a high-tech energy complex center. Fermi America, co-founded by former U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry and Toby Neugebauer, is seeking to build the world's largest (11GW) high-tech energy complex on a site near Amarillo, Texas. The project will consist of four large nuclear power plants, power supply infrastructure including SMRs, combined gas power, and solar power, and AI data centers. KHNP, Samsung C&T, and Fermi America agreed to work closely together to facilitate this project.
Additionally, KHNP signed a MOU with U.S. nuclear fuel and services supplier Centrus to expand the supply of enriched uranium. This agreement aims to establish a stable nuclear fuel supply chain in the mid to long term and preemptively secure next-generation nuclear fuel. KHNP will also participate in investment to build Centrus's enrichment facilities. The company, along with co-participant POSCO International, will continue discussions to expand cooperation in enrichment projects and make joint investments in new centrifuge plants scheduled to begin construction in the U.S.
These strategic investments and partnerships underscore KHNP's commitment to strengthening the energy resource security alliance between South Korea and the U.S. and ensuring the sustainability of nuclear power plants in response to the government's energy mix policy. Moreover, these collaborations position KHNP to improve the competitiveness of Korean nuclear power plants in the global nuclear market.
