The better answer would be modest rather than grand. Prescribers who dispense opioids to patients with pets should include a brief advisory about storage and accidental ingestion - the kind of warning already standard for child safety. State health departments, which distribute naloxone (the opioid-reversal drug) to communities, might coordinate with veterinary services so that emergency veterinary clinics can more readily manage opioid exposure. And pet poison-control data, already rich in detail, should be shared with public-health researchers as an ancillary indicator of household drug exposure. The infrastructure to do all of this largely exists. The missing ingredient is institutional co-ordination.
