Richard “Dick” Eastland, the 74-year-old owner and director of Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas, tragically lost his life while leading campers to safety during the devastating floods that struck Central Texas. Eastland, who was the third generation from his family to manage the camp, was known for his dedication and selflessness, qualities that were evident in his final actions.
Eastland was last seen leading a group of girls from a cabin, attempting to guide them to safety as the waters rose rapidly. His body was later found near his vehicle, a testament to his heroic efforts. The floods, which caused the Guadalupe River to rise more than 25 feet in less than an hour, caught many campers and staff off guard, resulting in widespread devastation and loss of life.
The Eastland family has a long history with Camp Mystic, having owned and operated the Christian girls’ summer camp since 1939. Dick and his wife, Tweety, purchased the camp in 1974 and served as executive directors for over 50 years. Their children are also integral to the camp's operations, with Richard Eastland serving as head chef, Edward Eastland managing the original Guadalupe River site, and Britt Eastland directing the Cypress Lake campus.
Eastland's involvement in the community extended beyond the camp. He served on the Hunt Independent School District Board and coached youth sports, including the West Kerr County Little League and the West Kerr County Little Dribblers. His survival of brain cancer further highlighted his resilience and strength.
The floods resulted in the deaths of 27 campers and counselors, with at least 10 campers and one counselor still missing as of July 7. The statewide death toll from the floods reached at least 95, with 75 people reported dead in Kerr County alone. The Texas National Guard and local authorities deployed helicopters, boats, and drones to locate survivors and recover the missing.
Survivors described scenes of chaos as staff worked to move campers to higher ground. The swift response of Eastland and the staff was credited with saving many lives. Texas Governor declared a state of emergency and pledged continued support for search and rescue operations, urging everyone to join in prayer for the lives lost, those still missing, and the recovery of the communities affected.
Camp Mystic expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested respect and privacy as it charts a new path forward. The community mourns the loss of Eastland and the campers, remembering their heroic actions and the deep sense of responsibility and care that defined Camp Mystic's culture. Eastland's legacy as a faithful servant and dedicated leader will endure, inspiring those whose lives he touched with his extraordinary dedication and sacrifice.
