Calistoga Fire Threatens Napa Vineyards, Evacuation Orders Intensify Amid Challenging Conditions

A rapidly spreading wildfire ignited on the northern outskirts of Calistoga on Thursday, leading to evacuation orders impacting numerous rural residents in Napa County. The Pickett Fire, reported approximately at 3 p.m. near the 2300 block of Pickett Road, lies just outside Calistoga's city limits. Cal Fire reported air and ground crews actively working to contain the blaze in this sparsely populated, mountainous area situated south of Mount St. Helena at the northern end of Napa Valley.

The fire continues to burn without containment, currently stretching over 1,200 acres by 5:30 p.m. as conditions remain challenging due to the region's hot and dry weather. Light southwesterly winds help push the flames away from Calistoga and the valley bottom, thus mitigating immediate threats to these densely populated localities. However, significant concerns persist regarding rural areas east and northeast of the city, including zones E120, E114, and E121B, which fall under evacuation orders. Meanwhile, warnings continue for zones E115, E121A, and E122 further east.

Efforts to combat the fire involve 215 firefighters as of the latest update, deploying a range of equipment including 27 fire engines, six hand crews, four bulldozers, and multiple water tenders and aircraft. Despite these extensive efforts, the fire remains uncontained, prompting vigilant monitoring as temperatures linger near 100 degrees, aggravating the already dry conditions.

Authorities emphasize the importance of adherence to evacuation orders, which encompass a myriad of rural properties extending to prominent vineyards such as Poggi Wines, Eisele Vineyard, Venge Vineyards, and Kenefick Ranch. The Calistoga Community Center has been designated as an evacuation site for displaced residents, with provisions also made for small animals. Residents with larger animals are directed to coordinate with local animal response services.

The situation remains dynamic, with the potential for heightened risks and further evacuation should the winds shift unexpectedly, possibly pushing the fire towards more populated areas. Cal Fire advises residents and communities to stay informed and prepared as the fire-fighting operation continues.

Though preliminary statements from local meteorologists suggest relatively stable wind patterns, with speeds around 5 to 10 mph, the risk posed by erratic canyon and ridge winds remains considerable. Such conditions could inadvertently intensify the fire’s spread in these isolated areas, demanding continued caution from all involved.

Smoke from the fire extends across a wide area, with alerts regarding air quality issued for Sonoma, Napa, and Solano counties. Residents in these areas are being advised to take necessary precautions to minimize smoke exposure, emphasizing protective measures for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions.
