California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to launch a parody cryptocurrency called the "Trump Corruption Coin" as part of his Campaign for Democracy initiative. Proceeds will fund voter outreach and redistricting drives. The move reflects the increasing integration of digital assets into US politics, with both parties using blockchain tools and tokens to raise money and energize their bases ahead of the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential election.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to launch a parody cryptocurrency called the "Trump Corruption Coin" as part of his Campaign for Democracy initiative. The coin, set to be launched soon, will fund voter outreach and redistricting drives. This move underscores the increasing integration of digital assets into US politics, with both parties using blockchain tools and tokens to raise money and energize their bases ahead of the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential election.
Newsom made the announcement during an appearance on the "Pivot" podcast, stating that the coin is named after Trump's alleged scandals and is part of his broader campaign to expose the "absurdity" of Trump's crypto ventures. "We’re about to put a meme coin out," Newsom said. "And you know what, Donald Trump? We’ll see how well your coin does versus our coin." The proceeds from the coin will be used for voter outreach and redistricting efforts, reflecting Newsom's broader initiative to strengthen democracy.
Trump has been actively involved in the crypto space, with significant earnings from digital assets. In June, he disclosed earning $57.4 million from his stake in World Liberty Financial, holding over 15.7 billion WLFI governance tokens. His company, Trump Media and Technology Group, also reported holding over $2 billion in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. A report from The New Yorker estimated that Trump has amassed roughly $2.4 billion from crypto-related ventures since 2022, accounting for nearly 44% of his post-presidency wealth.
Newsom's announcement is part of a broader strategy to parody Trump's political style. Over the past week, he has taken to his official X account to mimic Trump’s all-caps tweets and has launched an online store selling satirical merchandise, including red caps modeled on Trump’s MAGA hats.
The "Trump Corruption Coin" is not yet available for purchase, and its success in the crypto market remains to be seen. However, the move highlights the growing use of cryptocurrencies in political campaigns and the potential for meme coins to draw attention to political issues.
