BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant, has once again defied market headwinds with its April 2025 sales figures, posting a 21.34% year-on-year increase in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales to 380,089 units. This robust performance—driven by a surge in fully electric vehicles (EVs) overtaking plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) for the first time since 2024—positions BYD as a global disruptor in an industry still grappling with shifting consumer preferences and supply chain challenges.

BYD’s April data marks a pivotal moment: EVs outsold PHEVs for the first time since January 2024, with 195,740 EVs sold (a 45% YoY jump) versus 176,875 PHEVs. This reflects a strategic pivot toward battery-electric vehicles, accelerated by falling battery costs and growing consumer demand for zero-emission cars. The Seagull, priced under $10,000 in China, exemplifies this strategy, selling 55,028 units in April—a 57.98% YoY increase—and becoming BYD’s second-highest seller. Meanwhile, the Tang, a luxury SUV, saw sales
77.26% month-on-month, underscoring BYD’s ability to cater to both budget-conscious and premium markets.BYD’s global ambitions are equally striking. Overseas sales hit 79,086 units in April, nearly double the figure from April 2024, with the company’s largest car carrier, the "BYD Shenzhen," embarking on its maiden voyage to Brazil, capable of transporting 9,200 vehicles. Analysts project European sales alone to surpass 186,000 units in 2025, tripling from 2024 levels. This expansion is fueled by BYD’s aggressive pricing—the Seagull’s sub-$10,000 starting price—combined with partnerships in emerging markets like Mexico and Southeast Asia.
BYD’s sub-brands are another growth engine. The Denza premium line sold 15,388 units in April, up 38% YoY, with the D9 MPV leading sales. Meanwhile, the Fang Cheng Bao personalized sub-brand surged 375% YoY, driven by compact models like the Bao 5. Even the Yangwang ultra-luxury brand, though small, grew month-on-month, selling 135 units of the U8 SUV and U9 supercar. This multi-tiered approach ensures BYD captures segments from budget buyers to ultra-luxury consumers.
Despite its momentum, BYD faces hurdles. The Chaser 05, a once-popular sedan, saw sales plunge 86.77% YoY to 4,340 units, signaling potential overreliance on a few top models. Additionally, European regulators’ scrutiny of Chinese EVs and U.S. trade barriers could test BYD’s global ambitions.
BYD’s April results are a masterclass in execution. With a 5.5 million annual sales target by 2025—including 800,000 units overseas—and a product lineup spanning $10,000 EVs to $200,000 supercars, the company is rewriting the rules of automotive competition. Its 21.34% YoY sales growth, EV-PHEV crossover, and record-breaking overseas sales underscore a trajectory few rivals can match.
While risks linger, BYD’s scale, pricing power, and geographic diversification make it a compelling investment. The data is clear: in an industry still searching for stability, BYD is the rare automaker turning volatility into opportunity.
BYD’s April performance isn’t just a blip—it’s a blueprint.
