Chinese automaker BYD has made headlines with its latest announcement, unveiling a self-driving car priced at just $9,500. The company, known for its innovative and affordable electric vehicles, has integrated its "God's Eye" driver-assistance system as standard equipment across 21 upgraded models, including its most affordable car, the "Seagull."
The Seagull, a tiny hatchback, is priced at 69,800 yuan ($9,500), making it one-third the cost of Tesla's cheapest car, the Model 3. This strategic move by BYD is set to disrupt the global electric vehicle market, particularly in Latin American countries where the car will be available under the "Dolphin" name.
BYD's cost-saving strategy is evident in the production of its tracking system, which costs just 2,800 yuan ($383.29) per unit, a fraction of the industry average of 20,000 yuan ($2,737.76). The company has engineered a combination of cameras and radar instead of relying on expensive laser sensors, further reducing production costs.
The backbone of BYD's self-driving cars is the "Xuanji Architecture," a massive cloud network built in collaboration with telecommunications giant Huawei. This network coordinates operations between cloud AI and vehicle AI through three communication layers: car network, 5G, and satellite network. The system processes an impressive 1.2 petabytes of driving data daily.
The "God's Eye" system comes in three tiers, with the basic "C" version using 12 cameras and various radar sensors. The mid-tier "B" version adds a laser sensor, while the top "A" spec includes three additional lasers. Even the base setup offers features like highway self-driving, typically found only in luxury vehicles. The system also includes remote parking via smartphones and the ability to pass vehicles and change lanes on highways, although these capabilities still require driver supervision.
BYD's announcement comes amidst a competitive global EV market, with the European Union imposing tariffs ranging from 17% to 35.3% on Chinese electric cars. The United States and Canada are also raising their tariffs as high as 100%. In response, BYD is building a factory in Hungary and sourcing parts from
