Buffett's Uncharacteristic Tech Bet Fuels Alphabet's AI Surge

Alphabet Inc. shares surged nearly 5% in early trading on Monday after Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a $4.3 billion stake in the Google parent, marking one of the conglomerate's most significant technology investments in years. The stock's rally comes as AlphabetGOOGL-- unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Gemini 3, which analysts have hailed as a "state-of-the-art" advancement in AI capabilities. The model, which improves upon its predecessor, Gemini 2.5, is designed to deliver more accurate responses to complex queries with reduced prompting.
Gemini 3's integration into Google's search products, the Gemini app, and enterprise services has been praised by analysts at D.A. Davidson, who called it a "genuinely strong model" and noted its ability to "meaningfully move the frontier forward" in certain areas. Bank of America Securities analysts echoed this sentiment, stating the model represents a "positive step" for Alphabet to close the "perceived LLM performance gap" with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. The model's release coincides with growing competition in the AI sector, where OpenAI's GPT-5 and Anthropic's Sonnet 4.5 have dominated the market.
Berkshire's investment in Alphabet, revealed in a regulatory filing, has added momentum to the stock, which has gained over 55% year-to-date. The move surprised many given Buffett's historical caution toward high-growth tech stocks, though it is likely overseen by his lieutenants, Todd Combs or Ted Weschler. Alphabet's stock has also benefited from strong demand for AI-driven cloud services and a recent antitrust ruling that limited remedies for its search-engine dominance.
Gemini 3's commercial potential is underscored by its immediate integration into revenue-generating products, including Google Search, and its deployment of "Gemini Agent", a tool capable of automating multi-step tasks like booking travel or managing inboxes. The model's enhanced coding and visualization capabilities have drawn comparisons to OpenAI's offerings, with Bank of America analysts noting "healthy adoption metrics" for Alphabet's AI tools.
While the long-term impact of Gemini 3 remains to be seen, analysts agree the model positions Alphabet as a formidable player in the AI race. "We'd go as far to say that this latest model from Google DeepMind meaningfully moves the frontier forward," D.A. Davidson analysts wrote. With Alphabet's stock trading at a discount to peers and Buffett's backing, the company appears well-positioned to capitalize on the AI boom.
