Boralex Inc. ("Boralex" or the "Company") (TSX: BLX) has announced a significant expansion in its UK portfolio with the addition of another 97 MW, including a 50 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This project, the Clashindarroch Wind Farm Extension, is part of Boralex's strategic plan to significantly increase the share of solar power and make a breakthrough in storage by 2025. The company aims to achieve this by diversifying its geographic presence in Europe and other U.S. states, while accelerating wind power development in Canada. This expansion aligns with Boralex's commitment to integrating its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities, into its strategic directions.
The 145 MW Clashindarroch Wind Farm Extension and adjacent 50 MW BESS will be developed, constructed, and operated through a joint venture between Boralex and Clashindarroch Wind Farm Extension Ltd. The project is located near Dufftown in Moray, Scotland, and is expected to create local jobs and support the community. The wind farm will consist of up to 22 wind turbines, each with an installed capacity of up to 6.6 MW, as well as a battery storage facility of up to 50 MW.

This expansion contributes to the UK's goal of doubling onshore wind capacity by 2030. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 120,000 tonnes annually, based on average UK grid emissions. This aligns with the UK's net-zero targets and supports the government's Clean Power Action Plan, aiming to unlock £40 billion in private sector investments for renewable energy infrastructure.
Boralex's expansion in the UK is part of its strategic direction to diversify its geographic presence in Europe. The company has already achieved planning consent for two projects in the UK: the 49.9 MW Loch Toftingall BESS and the 149.9m-to-tip Dragon LNG wind farm. These projects, along with the Clashindarroch Wind Farm Extension, demonstrate Boralex's commitment to growth in the UK market and its pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
Boralex's expansion in the UK also impacts its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, particularly its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities. The project contributes to the UK's clean energy transition, supporting the government's Clean Power Action Plan. The BESS component enhances grid stability and efficiency, further reducing the project's environmental impact. Socially, the project creates local jobs and supports the community, while governance-wise, Boralex's commitment to sustainable development and stakeholder engagement is evident in its transparent communication and collaboration with local authorities.
In conclusion, Boralex's 97 MW expansion in the UK, including a 50 MW BESS, is a significant step towards achieving its strategic goals and supporting the UK's clean energy transition. This project aligns with the company's CSR strategy and contributes to the UK's net-zero targets, demonstrating Boralex's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and responsible business practices.
