Boil Water Advisory PG County After Major Water Main Break Near Cheverly Metro Station

WSSC Water has issued a boil water advisory affecting approximately 11,200 customers in parts of Prince George's County, Maryland, due to a significant water main break near the Cheverly Metro station. The incident involves a 16-inch diameter water main break, discovered at 5540 Columbia Park in Hyattsville, prompting the advisory. The affected areas include the towns of Cheverly, Seat Pleasant, Capitol Heights, and other nearby communities.

The boil water advisory was announced following a water main emergency on Friday night. WSSC Water crews have successfully halted the flow of water at the break site to prevent water loss, ensuring that no residential customers are left without water. Despite these efforts, repair timelines remain uncertain, as an estimated time for the completion of repairs has not been provided. Before commencement of repair work, crews will need to construct an access road to reach the broken pipe.

Residents in the impacted regions are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before use. This precautionary measure should be followed for activities such as drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing baby food and formula, making ice, and providing water to pets. It is also advised that any stored water, drinks, or ice made before the advisory be discarded. Boiled water can be safely stored in a clean, covered container for future use. However, the water used for bathing does not require boiling, provided it is not ingested.

To assist affected customers, a water distribution center has been established at the Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Center, located at 2300 Belleview Avenue in Cheverly. This facility opened its doors overnight and will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, offering bottled water to residents during the advisory period.

WSSC Water has committed to ongoing monitoring and testing of the water supply to ensure its safety for consumption before the advisory is lifted. A map has been provided for residents to confirm if they are within the impacted areas. In the meantime, the Cheverly Metro Station continues to function but without water access.
