(BA) experienced a significant decline in trading volume, with a total turnover of $3.165 billion, marking a 49.02% decrease from the previous day. This placed Boeing at the 20th position in terms of trading volume for the day. The stock price of Boeing also saw a 1.68% drop, marking the fourth consecutive day of decline, with a total decrease of 7.90% over the past four days. The recent crash of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, India, has once again brought scrutiny to Boeing. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff, resulted in the deaths of nearly all 242 passengers and crew on board. This is the first fatal crash involving the 787 Dreamliner since it entered service in 2011.
Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, known for its extensive use of lithium-ion batteries, has a history of issues. In 2013, the entire 787 fleet was grounded due to battery overheating, which in some cases led to fires. The 787 Dreamliner's crash in India has raised concerns about the safety of the aircraft, which could potentially impact Boeing's stock price.
Boeing's 737 Max has also faced significant challenges. Two crashes in 2018 and 2019, one in Indonesia and the other in Ethiopia, resulted in the deaths of 346 people. The crashes were attributed to a faulty sensor that caused the plane's nose to pitch down, leaving pilots unable to regain control. Following the second crash, all Max jets were grounded worldwide until Boeing redesigned the system.
Boeing's financial performance has also been under strain. The company reported a loss of $11.8 billion in 2024, bringing its total losses since 2019 to over $35 billion. The financial woes were exacerbated by a strike by machinists at Boeing's factories in Renton and Everett, Washington, which halted production and affected delivery capabilities.
Despite these challenges, Boeing has shown some progress in stabilizing its operations. For the first three months of 2025, the company reported a narrower loss of $31 million compared to the previous year. CEO Kelly Ortberg noted that Boeing made progress in stabilizing operations during the quarter.
Boeing's aircraft deliveries have been affected by increased government scrutiny and the workers' strike. In 2024, Boeing delivered 348 jetliners, which was a third fewer than the 528 delivered in the previous year. However, Boeing's troubles have not deterred airline customers from purchasing its jets. Last month, the company secured significant orders from two Middle Eastern customers, including a $96 billion order for 787 and 777X jets from Qatar.
