Boeing engineers confirmed late Tuesday that the ninth and tenth O3b mPOWER satellites, manufactured for global satellite operator SES, successfully launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellites lifted off at 5:12 p.m. Eastern Time and completed their deployment approximately two hours later. This event marks a significant milestone in the construction of SES's high-performance medium Earth orbit satellite constellation.
Engineers at Boeing's Mission Control Center in El Segundo, California, initiated a series of safety checks immediately after the satellites separated from the launch vehicle. The new satellites are equipped with advanced xenon propulsion systems and will embark on a 130-day journey to their operational orbit, approximately 8,000 kilometers from Earth. Upon arrival, they will join the existing eight satellites in the SES O3b mPOWER network, which began offering commercial services in April 2024.
The O3b mPOWER satellite network is designed to deliver fiber-like internet connectivity from space, meeting the reliability and security requirements of both commercial and government clients. This successful launch underscores Boeing's commitment to advancing satellite technology and enhancing global connectivity solutions. The satellites have already begun transmitting signals from their orbit, further solidifying the progress of the SES high-performance satellite constellation.
This launch is a testament to the collaborative efforts between
and SpaceX, demonstrating the capabilities of both companies in the aerospace industry. The successful deployment of these satellites not only expands the SES O3b mPOWER network but also highlights the advancements in satellite technology that are crucial for providing reliable and secure internet connectivity on a global scale. The journey of these satellites to their operational orbit will take approximately 130 days, during which they will undergo various checks and calibrations to ensure optimal performance once they reach their destination. The addition of these two new satellites to the SES O3b mPOWER network will enhance the overall capacity and coverage of the constellation, providing even more robust internet connectivity solutions to clients worldwide. The network's ability to deliver fiber-like internet connectivity from space is a significant achievement, offering a reliable and secure alternative to traditional ground-based internet services. This successful launch and deployment further cement Boeing's position as a leader in satellite technology and its commitment to driving innovation in the aerospace industry.
