The resumption of deliveries comes after a temporary scaling back of tariffs and successful negotiations between the U.S. and China. The delivery is Boeing’s first to a Chinese carrier since April, when the company paused shipments amid rising tariffs linked to the ongoing trade conflict between Washington and Beijing [2].
The U.S. aerospace giant had suspended new aircraft deliveries to China in April due to escalating trade tensions. However, at the end of May, Boeing confirmed that deliveries would resume this month following a temporary 90-day easing of trade restrictions [1].
China and the U.S. concluded two days of negotiations in London on June 12, 2025, where negotiators from Washington and Beijing agreed on a framework covering tariff rates. This breakthrough has facilitated the resumption of aircraft deliveries, including a Boeing 737 MAX for Xiamen Airlines that landed in China on Monday [1].
The resumed deliveries are crucial for Boeing, as China represents about 10% of its commercial aircraft backlog and is an important and growing aviation market. Boeing had previously warned that unless tariffs were lifted or paused, Chinese airlines would not take possession of already-produced aircraft [3].
The development may offer much-needed momentum for Boeing, which had previously considered reselling dozens of aircraft intended for Chinese customers due to trade barriers. With negotiations progressing and tariffs easing, the company is now better positioned to recapture lost ground in Asia’s fast-growing aviation sector.
