Bitcoin News Today: UAE Airlines Expand Crypto Payments for Flights and In-Flight Services
The United Arab Emirates is advancing its position as a global leader in digital innovation, with several airlines now enabling travelers to purchase flight tickets using cryptocurrency. Starting in 2025, major carriers such as Emirates and Air Arabia have begun incorporating crypto payment systems for flights, upgrades, and in-flight purchases, in collaboration with platforms like Crypto.com and Travala. This initiative is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to attract digital nomads and tech-forward tourists by offering flexible, borderless payment solutions [1].
Emirates has partnered with Crypto.com to develop a crypto payment system set to launch in 2026. The service will support popular cryptocurrencies like BitcoinBTC-- (BTC), EthereumETH-- (ETH), and stablecoins including USDTUSDT-- and USDCUSDC--, with plans to expand to over 30 digital currencies. Travelers will have the option to pay for flights and ancillary services such as seat upgrades and onboard purchases using these digital assets [2].
Meanwhile, budget carrier Air Arabia has already begun accepting AE Coin, a stablecoin backed by the UAE dirham, for flight bookings. This move simplifies transactions for local travelers who are more familiar with the digital dirham, offering a smoother and more intuitive experience [2]. The UAE’s regulatory framework, including Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), is expected to foster continued growth in crypto-based travel services, potentially leading to innovations like blockchain-optimized visaV-- processing and crypto-powered loyalty programs [3].
Several platforms now support crypto bookings for UAE-based flights, including Travala, Alternative Airlines, and Destinia. These platforms accommodate a range of digital assets, from BTC and ETH to XRPXRP--, LitecoinLTC--, and DogecoinDOGE--. For instance, Travala allows payments using BTC, ETH, USDT, and its native token AVA, while Alternative Airlines supports over a dozen cryptocurrencies [3]. Travelers can book flights by selecting a crypto-friendly platform, entering their travel details, choosing the crypto payment option at checkout, connecting their digital wallet, authorizing the transaction, and receiving an e-ticket via email or the platform [3].
The rise of crypto payments in the travel sector reflects growing demand for flexible, cross-border financial tools. According to reports, Travala experienced a 46% increase in crypto bookings between January 2023 and January 2024, highlighting a shift among travelers toward digital currencies to avoid traditional banking fees and credit card charges [3].
This trend aligns with the UAE’s ambition to become a global hub for cryptocurrency adoption, positioning the country at the forefront of financial and technological innovation. As more airlines and platforms integrate crypto options, the convenience and appeal of digital assets for air travel are expected to grow further.
