GOAT Network has launched a public beta for a Bitcoin Layer 2 solution leveraging real-time zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, claiming it is the first to achieve proof generation in under three seconds [1]. This testnet, named BitVM2 Beta, aims to address Bitcoin’s known limitations, including slow finality and the absence of scalable, BTC-denominated yield options. By enabling fast withdrawals and native BTC yield, the project avoids reliance on altcoins or custodians [1].

Layer 2 solutions function by processing transactions off-chain, reducing congestion and fees while relying on the underlying chain for security and final settlement. GOAT Network’s approach eliminates delays and proof backlogs by using a decentralized network of GPU-powered nodes to process blocks, aggregation, and Groth16 proofs in parallel [1].

The project, which originated as a zero-knowledge research initiative in 2023, transitioned to Bitcoin in 2024. GOAT adapted its zk-prover infrastructure to operate within Bitcoin’s more restricted scripting environment [1]. CEO Kevin Liu emphasized that the system’s efficiency and security hinge on fast ZK proofs. “If proofs lag behind, it creates inefficiencies and security risks,” he stated [1].

GOAT’s solution allows users to stake Bitcoin into decentralized sequencer nodes, which process rollup transactions and distribute a share of the gas fees generated [1]. Security is enforced through three mechanisms: decentralized sequencers to prevent single points of failure, a trustless bridge with an Optimistic Challenge Process to detect invalid withdrawals, and ZK proofs that only validate legitimate transactions [1]. According to Liu, if a malicious node attempts to alter a transaction, the proof will fail to finalize on the Bitcoin mainnet [1].

The company differentiates itself from other Bitcoin Layer 2 projects that operate via sidechains, asserting that all transactions are ultimately settled directly on the Bitcoin blockchain [1]. Disputes are validated by Bitcoin miners, and the bridge operates without intermediaries, ensuring users retain control over their assets [1].

GOAT is among several teams developing ZK solutions on Bitcoin, including BitcoinOS, StarkWare, and Build on Bitcoin (BOB). Liu acknowledges the skepticism surrounding new Layer 2s but argues the timing is favorable. “This is Bitcoin’s OP moment,” he said, referencing Ethereum’s Optimism project. “Now the tech works—and it’s time to prove it.” BitVM2 ZK Rollups are expected to be publicly available before year-end [1].
