Czech police have arrested Tomáš Jirikovský, the founder of the darknet marketplace Sheep Marketplace, in connection with a $45 million
bribery scheme linked to the resignation of Justice Minister Pavel Blažek in May 2025. The transaction involved 468 BTC, and preliminary investigations suggest that Jirikovský used the funds to bribe the minister in an effort to avoid serving a prison sentence. During a search operation, Jirikovský attempted to flee by climbing onto the roof of a building but was apprehended and taken into custody [1].Jirikovský previously served a nine-year prison sentence from 2017 for embezzlement, drug trafficking, and illegal possession of weapons. He was released on parole in 2021 after demonstrating good behavior. His arrest marks the latest development in a broader investigation into darknet and cryptocurrency-related criminal activities [2].
The case has drawn attention to the traceability of large Bitcoin transactions. Despite the anonymity often associated with darknet marketplaces, experts note that significant transfers are increasingly detectable on the blockchain. Lucien Bourdon, an analyst at Trezor, emphasized that the case illustrates the transparency of cryptocurrency transactions and the potential for law enforcement to track illicit financial flows [2].
Further on-chain analysis revealed that some of the funds used in the bribery may have originated from a wallet linked to Nucleus, another darknet marketplace that recently reactivated after a nine-year dormancy. Nucleus reportedly holds 5,000 BTC, and a $77.5 million transaction from its wallet in March 2025 raised eyebrows among analysts [2].
Authorities are continuing to investigate the full scope of the case, ensuring the protection of both defendants and witnesses. As of now, no formal charges have been filed against Jirikovský. The case highlights the growing role of digital currencies in high-level corruption and the challenges authorities face in regulating and tracing such transactions [3].
The arrest underscores a broader trend of increased scrutiny on cryptocurrency use in illicit activities. As digital assets become more prevalent in both legal and illegal financial systems, law enforcement agencies are developing more sophisticated tools to monitor and respond to suspicious activity. This case may serve as a precedent for future enforcement actions involving cryptocurrency in corruption and organized crime [1].
