“Killing Satoshi,” a Hollywood conspiracy thriller centered on the mystery of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, has entered production with a star-studded cast and a prominent production team. Doug Liman, known for directing “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” is set to helm the film, which will feature Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck and comedian Pete Davidson in lead roles. The film, described as a high-stakes thriller, will explore the global intrigue surrounding the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto and the implications of his invention on the world’s financial systems [1].
The project is being produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, the former chief of Relativity Media, who previously funded major films like “The Social Network” and “The Fighter.” Kavanaugh, a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency, emphasized the significance of the film, comparing it to his earlier work on “The Social Network,” which examined the origins of Facebook. He described the film as more than just a story about
but an exploration of what the technology represents [1].According to Variety, the film is written by Nick Schenk, a screenwriter known for his work with Clint Eastwood on “Gran Torino” and “The Mule.” Schenk’s script will follow an elite cabal’s efforts to suppress the truth about Satoshi’s identity, framing the narrative around a global battle involving governments, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley. Liman described the film as a “David and Goliath” story, where antiheroes challenge the most powerful institutions to uncover the truth behind money and control [1].
The production of “Killing Satoshi” is set to begin in London in October, with a projected 2026 release. The film is being fully financed by Ryan Kavanaugh’s production company, Proxima, in collaboration with Aperture Media Partners. The production team includes Lawrence Grey and Shane Valdez, with Jared Underwood of Aperture Media serving as an executive producer. The film will be overseen by the UK-based Production Lens, co-founded by Kavanaugh, Grey, and veteran producer Garret Grant [1].
Satoshi Nakamoto, the presumed creator of Bitcoin, has become a cultural and financial icon. Blockchain analysts estimate that Nakamoto mined approximately 1 million Bitcoin between 2009 and 2010, a fortune now valued at over $120 billion. The creator’s identity remains unknown, and the associated wallets have not been touched, fueling speculation and conspiracy theories. As one of the most enduring mysteries of the 21st century, Nakamoto’s story has drawn the attention of Hollywood, reflecting the growing influence of cryptocurrency in mainstream culture [1].
The film’s production is occurring amid increasing interest in Bitcoin’s potential as an asset. Analysts from Bitwise, Bernstein, and Standard Chartered have projected that Bitcoin could reach $200,000 by 2026, which would significantly elevate the theoretical wealth of Satoshi Nakamoto. Some speculative forecasts, such as those from Tom Lee and Arthur Hayes, suggest Bitcoin could reach $500,000 or even $1 million per coin, potentially making Satoshi the first trillionaire in history. However, such projections remain uncertain and are not considered established facts [2].
The announcement of “Killing Satoshi” follows recent attempts to uncover the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, including the 2024 HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” which pointed to Peter Todd as a potential candidate. While Todd denied the claims, the mystery surrounding Nakamoto continues to attract public and media attention. The film’s fictionalized approach to the mystery will likely contribute to ongoing debates and interest in the identity of the person—or group—who created Bitcoin [2].
