Block has launched Proto Rig, a modular
mining rig designed to last up to 10 years, marking a significant shift in the industry’s approach to hardware durability and cost efficiency. The rig is part of a broader initiative by , which also includes Proto Fleet, a free and open-source fleet management software platform. Together, these tools aim to decentralize mining operations, streamline software management, and reduce maintenance costs across the Bitcoin mining ecosystem [4].Proto Rig introduces a modular design that allows for individual hashboard replacement, eliminating the need to replace entire units when components fail. This approach reduces upgrade costs by approximately 15–20% per cycle and enables faster repairs, significantly cutting downtime. Traditional mining hardware often requires costly and time-consuming repairs and upgrades, leading to shorter lifespans and inefficiencies in energy and space usage. By extending hardware longevity to a decade, Proto Rig positions itself as an infrastructure investment rather than a short-term, disposable asset [1].
The hardware also boasts 1.5 times the power per foot of rack space compared to conventional miners, allowing for better space utilization and compatibility with both modern and legacy infrastructure. This design flexibility makes it easier for operators to integrate Proto Rig into existing facilities without costly retrofits. The launch took place at Core Scientific’s facility in Dalton, Georgia, where Proto Rigs are already in use as part of the company’s mining fleet [2].
Complementing the hardware, Proto Fleet offers a centralized, open-source software solution that consolidates power scaling, monitoring, diagnostics, and maintenance tools into a single platform. This move addresses the fragmented nature of existing mining software ecosystems, where operators often have to use multiple tools to manage operations. By making Proto Fleet freely accessible, Block aims to democratize access to high-quality mining software, allowing both small and large-scale operators to benefit from streamlined management [3].
“Mining hardware hasn’t really changed in years,” said Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block. “Machines break often, are hard to repair, expensive and time-consuming to upgrade, and don’t make the most efficient use of power or space. With Rig, we set out to change all of that—and contribute to hardware decentralization in the process.” The modular design not only improves durability and efficiency but also aligns with Block’s broader commitment to supporting the Bitcoin ecosystem through initiatives such as Square, Cash App, Bitkey, and Spiral [4].
By combining hardware innovation with open-source software solutions, Block is reshaping the cost structure and accessibility of Bitcoin mining. The 10-year lifespan of Proto Rig, combined with its modular and repairable architecture, could redefine the economic model of mining operations, reducing long-term expenses and increasing operational resilience. The launch underscores a strategic shift in the industry toward sustainability and efficiency, with Block positioning itself as a key player in driving these advancements [5].
