Breez, a leading provider of self-custodial Lightning Network solutions, has made significant strides in 2025 by onboarding 12 new applications to its
Lightning SDK in Q2, doubling its Q1 integration pace. The company's Class of Q2 includes platforms like Bitmo, Bitpost, and Grimm App, which leverage the Breez SDK to enable seamless, low-cost Bitcoin transactions. Breez emphasized that these partnerships underscore Bitcoin's growing utility as "universal money" and the SDK's role in simplifying integration for developers.
To further drive adoption, Breez launched Time2Build, a developer initiative offering rewards for integrating its Lightning SDK into open-source projects. Unlike traditional hackathons, the program incentivizes code accepted by project maintainers, ensuring sustainable, real-world adoption. Partners include Lightspark,
, and Plan ₿ Network, with prize pools funded by Breez and collaborators. The initiative aims to embed Bitcoin payments into everyday apps, from social tipping platforms to decentralized finance tools. The Breez SDK itself has emerged as a cornerstone of Bitcoin's infrastructure. By removing third-party dependencies, it enables developers to integrate self-custodial Lightning payments with minimal effort. The SDK's open-source nature and compatibility with services like Lightspark's infrastructure further lower barriers for adoption. Notably, Breez recently partnered with
, a Bitcoin-native Layer 2 network, to enhance its SDK's capabilities. This collaboration allows developers to build scalable, self-custodial applications with real-time notifications and support for LNURL, positioning Bitcoin as a global, permissionless currency. The Lightning Network's growth has been a key driver of Bitcoin's infrastructure expansion. As of 2025, the network boasts nearly 1,600 nodes and 43,561 payment channels, capable of processing $480 million in transactions. Major corporations like Amazon and Google now operate 45% of Lightning nodes, signaling a shift toward institutional adoption. This infrastructure surge has enabled non-crypto entities, including digital banks like SoFi and grocery chains like Spar, to adopt Lightning for cross-border and retail payments.
Meanwhile, Tether's integration of Spark's Lightning infrastructure into its Wallet Development Kit (WDK) highlights the convergence of stablecoins and Bitcoin-native tools. The open-source WDK allows developers to create non-custodial wallets supporting Bitcoin and stablecoin transactions, aligning with Tether's vision for privacy-focused financial systems. This move also supports autonomous AI agents within Tether's QVAC ecosystem, enabling machines to transact in Bitcoin and USD₮.
Breez's efforts are part of a broader trend of Bitcoin infrastructure innovation. Companies like Roxom, Blockstream, and Arch Labs are building BTC-native financial systems, capital markets, and smart contract platforms. Block's Cash App, for instance, reported a 7x increase in Lightning usage in 2024, with 9.7% annual yield from Lightning node operations. These developments challenge Bitcoin's traditional "digital gold" narrative, showcasing its potential as a scalable payments and settlement layer.
As the Lightning Network matures, challenges remain, including privacy concerns and the need for wider merchant adoption. However, initiatives like Time2Build and corporate investments suggest a trajectory toward mainstream integration. Breez's CEO, Roy Sheinfeld, noted that the company's mission is to "bring Bitcoin into apps people use every day," emphasizing the role of developer tools in achieving this vision.
