BlackRock’s iShares
Trust ETF (IBIT) has become the largest known holder of Bitcoin, surpassing major exchanges and institutional entities, according to on-chain data from CryptoQuant. As of August 2025, the ETF holds over 781,000 BTC, valued at approximately $88 billion based on Bitcoin’s current price of around $113,000. This positions the fund as the second-largest known Bitcoin holder, only trailing the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto wallet [3]. The achievement marks a significant milestone in the institutional adoption of Bitcoin and underscores the growing preference for regulated financial products over direct exchange custody [7].The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, launched in January 2024, has rapidly accumulated Bitcoin holdings since its inception. The ETF has been the primary driver of demand in the market, with continuous inflows creating a supply shock by removing a substantial amount of Bitcoin from circulation. Unlike exchanges that use their reserves for trading, the ETF’s holdings are primarily for investment purposes, reducing the available supply and offering price support [3]. As of the latest data, the ETF’s holdings exceed those of
(703,000 BTC) and Binance (558,000 BTC), and it has even surpassed Bitcoin treasury company Strategy, which held 629,376 BTC before the shift [3].This institutional shift is redefining how Bitcoin is held and managed. BlackRock’s ETF now accounts for over 88 billion dollars’ worth of Bitcoin, signaling a broader trend of institutional investors favoring regulated, compliant investment vehicles over traditional exchange-based storage [3]. The trend is also reflected in the declining reserves on major exchanges, as institutional money flows into ETFs and similar products. This transition from exchange custody to institutional-grade financial instruments represents a maturation of Bitcoin as an asset class and reflects a growing confidence in the security and compliance of regulated investment structures [7].
The rise of the iShares ETF is not only reshaping Bitcoin’s custodial landscape but also influencing market dynamics. As the largest holder of Bitcoin in the institutional space, the fund’s activities have a direct impact on price movements and liquidity. The ETF’s inflows and outflows are closely watched by analysts and investors, with the ETF acting as a barometer of institutional sentiment. The shift in demand from retail-driven accumulation to institutional-grade investment is a key factor behind Bitcoin’s recent price resilience, especially as institutional buyers continue to accumulate the asset through regulated channels [3].
BlackRock’s ETF has also demonstrated its ability to outpace other major players in Bitcoin accumulation within a relatively short timeframe. In just a year and a half, the fund surpassed a five-year accumulation lead held by the Saylor Foundation-backed Strategy, highlighting the rapid pace of institutional adoption. This shift reflects a growing recognition of Bitcoin’s potential as a long-term store of value and its increasing integration into traditional financial markets [3].
The implications of this trend are multifaceted. On one hand, it represents a significant step forward in the mainstream acceptance of Bitcoin, with institutional investors increasingly viewing it as a legitimate asset class. On the other hand, it raises concerns about centralization, as Bitcoin’s original ethos emphasized decentralization and resistance to institutional control. As the custodial landscape continues to evolve, the balance between institutional adoption and decentralized principles will remain a topic of debate among market participants [3].
