The UK landfill site in Newport, Wales, which is believed to contain a hard drive worth approximately $777,323,760 in Bitcoin (BTC), is set to close by next year, according to a recent report. The landfill, which has been in operation since the early 2000s, is nearing the end of its lifespan, and the Newport City Council is working on a planned closure and capping of the site over the next two years.
In 2013, Welsh IT worker James Howells lost the hard drive containing 8,000 BTC during a house cleanup. He had mined the cryptocurrency on the hard drive in 2009, during its early days. Howells sought permission from the Newport City Council to search the landfill for his BTC stash, even offering to share profits. However, the council refused, citing significant environmental hazards and the unlikely chance of finding an intact hard drive after years of exposure to the elements.
Howells subsequently sued the council, but a judge ruled against him last month, deciding that there were no reasonable grounds for bringing the claim and no likelihood of prevailing if the claim went to a full trial.
The closure of the landfill site raises questions about the fate of the lost Bitcoin. While it is unlikely that the hard drive will be recovered intact, the closure of the site may make it more difficult for future attempts to locate and retrieve the BTC. The environmental impact of the landfill's closure is also a concern, as the release of harmful materials could pose a risk to the surrounding area.
The story of James Howells and his lost Bitcoin serves as a reminder of the importance of proper storage and backup of cryptocurrency. As the value of Bitcoin continues to fluctuate, the potential loss of such a large amount of the cryptocurrency highlights the risks associated with carelessness and lack of proper security measures.
