Binance has launched a beta version of a new wallet browser extension, leveraging keyless multi-party computation (MPC) technology to enhance the security of crypto asset management. The extension, currently available for
Chrome with plans for future expansion to other browsers, allows users to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) and manage assets across multiple blockchain networks, including EVM, , and . The technology eliminates the need for a single, traditional private key by splitting it into three separate key shares, which are independently stored. This method is intended to reduce the risk of a single point of failure in case of a breach. Users can access the feature by scanning a QR code or by importing existing wallets using a seed phrase or private key [1].The extension introduces a session expiration mechanism, with active sessions lasting a maximum of 48 hours and expiring after 24 hours of inactivity. Binance stated that these parameters are subject to adjustment following the beta phase. First-time users are required to set a password to activate the extension on the browser, adding an initial layer of access control. The system is also designed to synchronize mobile and browser-based wallet experiences, offering a seamless interface between the Binance app and the new browser extension [2].
Despite these innovations, the extension introduces new potential attack vectors. Security experts highlight that browser extensions can become points of exploitation if not carefully managed. Hackers could hijack the extension if it has broad host permissions or content scripts, enabling malicious actors to inject requests or manipulate transactions. Furthermore, if a user’s device is already compromised by malware, sensitive data such as seed phrases might be intercepted, especially if the save password option is enabled [1].
To mitigate these risks, Binance advises users to ensure they are downloading the official extension from trusted sources and to verify the authenticity of QR codes and website domains before initiating logins. Importing existing wallets through the extension should also be approached with caution, as it could expose all associated wallets to potential threats if the extension is compromised [1].
The introduction of this browser extension underscores Binance’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience while maintaining high security standards. The use of keyless MPC technology represents a significant step in evolving crypto wallet security, but it also highlights the persistent need for user education and vigilance in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats [2].
