Bill Ackman, the CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, made his professional tennis debut on Wednesday. The 59-year-old hedge fund executive entered a competitive ATP doubles tournament alongside Grand Slam champion Jack Sock. The match, which took place at the Tennis Hall of Fame Open, lasted a mere 67 minutes. Ackman and Sock faced Bernard Tomic and Omar Jasika, ultimately losing in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
Ackman's journey into professional tennis began when he, an avid tennis fan and amateur player, reposted a video of Nick Kyrgios scoring a difficult point. Kyrgios, impressed by Ackman's enthusiasm, offered him a tennis lesson. Ackman accepted the offer and sent Kyrgios videos of his practice and doubles matches. In March, Kyrgios suggested they play in a match together. However, Kyrgios later got injured, and Sock, who had secured a wildcard entry into the Tennis Hall of Fame Open in Newport, invited Ackman to be his partner. This opportunity allowed Ackman to participate in a World Tennis Association 125 event.
Before the match, Ackman expressed his excitement and confidence, stating, "I am playing the best tennis of my life and Jack is one of the greatest doubles players ever...and we start practice this Friday, so you never know. If we win, I am pretty sure I will be the oldest person in tennis history…to win ATP points." Despite his optimism, the match did not go as planned, and the duo faced criticism from some tennis greats, including former world number one Andy Roddick, who described the match as "the biggest joke I’ve watched in professional tennis."
Ackman's brief stint in professional tennis highlights his adventurous spirit and willingness to step out of his comfort zone. While he may not have achieved the same level of success on the tennis court as he has in the financial world, his debut serves as a reminder that even the most accomplished individuals can face challenges and setbacks in new endeavors. The match, though short-lived, was a testament to Ackman's determination and his ability to take on new challenges, even in areas outside his expertise. The criticism from some tennis greats underscores the high standards and expectations in professional tennis, where even the most seasoned players face intense competition and scrutiny. Ackman's experience on the court provides a unique perspective on the world of professional sports and the challenges faced by athletes at the highest level.
