Biden Allegedly Approved Ukraine's Usage Of U.S. Arms, And It Already Sparked Enormous Controversy
As Biden has only two months left in office as President of the United States, he seems to be seeking to escalate the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Media reports on Sunday, citing sources, said that the Biden administration has allowed Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to strike deep into Russian territory.
If this news is true, it will mark a significant shift in U.S. policy toward the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Sources told the media that Ukraine plans to carry out its first long-range strike against Russia in the coming days with ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 190 miles (306 kilometers), but details were not disclosed for operational security reasons.
Major Shift
For months, Ukrainian President Zelensky has been asking the United States to allow the Ukrainian military to use U.S.-made weapons to strike Russian military targets far from its borders. However, Biden has not agreed, fearing it would escalate the conflict.
The sources said that the U.S. shift is mainly in response to North Korea sending troops to aid Russia against Ukraine.
The U.S. believes that more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to eastern Russia, most of whom have been transferred to the Kursk region and have begun combat operations.
Although some U.S. officials are skeptical about whether allowing Ukraine to strike Russia from a distance will change the overall trajectory of the war, Biden's decision could help Ukraine as the Russian military makes progress on the battlefield and could put Ukraine in a stronger negotiating position in ceasefire talks.
On the Russia-Ukraine battlefield, Russia is advancing at the fastest pace since 2022. The Ukrainian side stated that the Ukrainian army had already clashed with some North Korean troops deployed in Kursk. Due to a shortage of soldiers, the Ukrainian army lost some of the land it occupied during the attack on Kursk in August. Zelensky once said that this land could be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Russia.
Since Trump won the U.S. election on November 5th, senior officials of the Biden administration have repeatedly stated that they will use the remaining term to ensure that Ukraine can effectively fight next year or negotiate peace with Russia from a position of strength.
Trump will officially take office on January 20th in two months. It is currently unclear whether he will overturn Biden's decision after taking office. Trump has long criticized the scale of U.S. financial and military assistance to Ukraine and vowed to end the war quickly, but did not explain how.
Responses
In response to the report that Ukraine has been approved to use long-range weapons to strike deep into Russia, Ukrainian President Zelensky did not directly confirm or deny it in his regular video speech on Sunday evening. He only responded by saying that the missiles will speak for themselves.
Russian officials also warned that Russia would regard the U.S. relaxation of restrictions on Ukraine's use of U.S.-made weapons as a significant escalation.
Vladimir Dzhabarov, the first deputy chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (upper house of parliament), said that the U.S. decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-made long-range missiles to strike the hinterland of Russia could lead to World War III, and Russia would respond immediately.
"The West has decided on such a level of escalation that it could end with the Ukrainian statehood in complete ruins by morning," said Andrei Klishas, a senior member of the Federation Council, on the instant messaging app Telegram.
Russian parliamentarian Maria Butina also warned on Monday that if the Biden administration allows Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to attack deep into Russia, it could trigger World War III.
This news has angered Trump's team as well.
Elon Musk, one of Trump's biggest donors and head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, was one of the first to criticize Biden. Shortly after Republican Senator Mike Lee posted that liberals love war, Musk agreed, saying, That's right.
As the U.S. government transitions, Biden's move, if true, undoubtedly marks a significant escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Since Ukraine received the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System in April, it has been requesting U.S. approval to use the weapon on Russian territory, but Biden has been unable to make up his mind.
With only two months left before he leaves office as President of the United States, Biden suddenly spirited up, which, in the view of Trump's administration members and supporters, seems more like a stumbling block for the new government.
Richard Grenell, a close ally of Trump and former acting director of the U.S. National Intelligence Agency, accused Biden of escalating the war before leaving office.
Donald Trump Jr., Trump's eldest son, states his opinions in a more 'direct' way. He posted on X, saying that the military-industrial complex (implying the Democratic government) seems to want to ensure that before his father Trump establishes peace and saves lives, a third world war is launched to lock in trillions of dollars. Lives are worthless.
Previously, Trump has repeatedly emphasized that he will end the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a very short time after he is elected president. The pressure of Trump taking office has indeed forced many Western polities, including the EU, to start contacting Ukraine to promote peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Musk also participated in the call between Trump and Ukrainian Prime Minister Zelensky after Trump's election, saying that the meaningless killing is about to end, and the era of warlord merchants is over.
Hearing this operation during the last transition period, the Trump camp is inevitably furious. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene angrily said that the American people have already voted against Biden's leadership on November 5th. People do not want to fund or participate in foreign wars but want to solve their own country's problems. All of this must be stopped.
Some political observers have said that the Biden administration wants to emphasize its support for Ukraine to North Korea, which is one of the reasons for escalating actions against Russia. For the United States, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has become more global, and it has also increased the possibility of Trump taking on the expanded risks of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
