Bhutan has launched the world's first national crypto tourism payment system, allowing travelers to pay for their travel expenses using over 100 cryptocurrencies. This initiative, launched on May 7, 2025, in partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank, enables hassle-free payments for airfare, lodging, visas, and local goods through the Binance application. The system supports more than 1,000 merchants in Bhutan, with DK Bank automatically converting crypto payments into local currency or USD to mitigate market volatility risks for merchants. This arrangement also eliminates high commissions from traditional payment processes, providing cheaper and faster settlements.
Damcho Rinzin, the Director of Bhutan's Department of Tourism, highlighted the economic benefits of this system, stating that it not only makes traveling easier but also boosts the economy by connecting remote vendors to global markets. The project aligns with Bhutan's tourism model, which focuses on high-value, low-volume tourism, aiming for 300,000 tourists annually with an average expenditure of $1,000 per visit. The implementation of crypto tourism in Bhutan is seen as a significant development in the digital financial world, offering a cashless travel experience and attracting tech-savvy travelers through Binance Pay's 40 million customers.

Through blockchain technology, Bhutan aims to achieve a sustainable economy while preserving its cultural and environmental heritage.
