Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) has issued a call for its customers to conserve electricity following an unplanned disconnection of a power plant from its system. BGE has stated that this disruption may lead to temporary outages in the region, urging customers to minimize their energy usage immediately and continue conservation efforts through the evening.
The utility has emphasized the importance of energy conservation in mitigating the potential for widespread outages. BGE is working with the plant owner to expedite the necessary repairs and is cooperating with PJM Interconnection to ensure the availability of sufficient power in the area. However, the utility warns that energy demands during peak hours may necessitate temporary outages to maintain the stability of the grid.
To prepare for possible outages, BGE recommends that customers store bottled water and non-perishable foods. It is advised to charge mobile phones, laptops, electric vehicles, and other essential battery-operated devices. Customers with landlines are encouraged to keep a corded phone handy to report outages if mobile service is disrupted.
As a preventive measure, BGE advises having a flashlight with fresh batteries accessible on each floor of residences. Customers who rely on refrigerated medications or medical equipment requiring power should have contingency arrangements in place.
For effective energy conservation, BGE suggests monitoring thermostat settings and utilizing fans instead of air conditioners to remain cool. Closing blinds and curtains can help in regulating indoor temperatures. Customers are also requested to delay the usage of high-energy appliances like ovens, stoves, dishwashers, and dryers. Non-essential appliances and electronics should be turned off to reduce power consumption during this critical period.
BGE has activated an emergency cycling event for customers participating in the PeakRewards Air Conditioning program, where air conditioning units will be cycled to their enrolled levels to manage system demands. Customers in the Connected Rewards program may experience slight thermostat adjustments, with opt-out options available by adjusting settings manually.
The utility remains committed to keeping its customers informed and plans to offer updates as new information becomes available.
