German software giant SAP has announced a significant investment of over €20 billion (approximately $23.3 billion) in Europe over the next decade. This substantial investment aims to bolster SAP's sovereign cloud services, including the introduction of a new Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform. The new platform will enable businesses to access various computing services through SAP's data center network, a market currently dominated by tech giants such as Microsoft and Amazon.
Additionally, SAP plans to launch a "local deployment option," allowing customers to use SAP-operated infrastructure within their own data centers. This initiative is designed to ensure that customer data remains within the EU, complying with regional data protection regulations like the GDPR. Thomas Saueressig, a board member responsible for SAP's customer service and delivery, emphasized the importance of innovation and sovereignty working together. He noted the critical need for European businesses to access cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence, in a fully autonomous environment.
The concept of "technology sovereignty" has gained traction due to geopolitical tensions, prompting companies to reassess their reliance on foreign technology. Global tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft have also launched new sovereign cloud initiatives to ensure European data is stored within the EU.
Separately, SAP's Solution Extension (SolEx) offers a partner solution with several benefits. SolEx solutions undergo SAP qualification/certification, architecture reviews, and integration testing, ensuring pre-validated integrations and lower implementation risk.
