Barrick Mining Corp partners with Komatsu to launch the FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System, aiming to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency. The system automates a fleet of 300 and 230-tonne haul trucks, reducing the need for onboard operators and minimizing employee exposure to hazards. The partnership also addresses challenges such as initial implementation costs and potential job displacement concerns. The collaboration marks a strategic move towards innovation and sustainability, potentially boosting investor confidence and market positioning.

Barrick Mining Corp. has partnered with Komatsu to implement the FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System, a significant advancement in mining technology. This collaboration aims to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency by automating a fleet of 300 and 230-tonne haul trucks. The system will reduce the need for onboard operators, thereby minimizing employee exposure to hazards [1].

The partnership, announced on July 2, 2025, marks the first implementation of the FrontRunner system for both companies within the United States. Nevada Gold Mines (NGM), a joint venture between Barrick and Newmont Corp., will deploy the system at its open pit mines. The primary goal is to enhance safety, predictability of fleet performance, fuel consumption, and continuous operations capability [1].

Komatsu’s general manager of Mining Technology Solutions, Braden Weisheit, emphasized the transformative nature of this deployment, stating, “The scale and ambition of this deployment mark a major milestone for autonomous mining in America. This collaboration reflects Komatsu’s commitment to delivering proven, world-class solutions tailored to our partners’ needs” [1].

To support the performance of the FrontRunner system, Sedna Inc. and Nokia Corp. will deploy a customized 5G communications infrastructure. This tailored network will provide the high-speed, low-latency connectivity required for seamless system performance, real-time data exchange, and safe, remote equipment operation [1].

The partnership also addresses potential challenges such as initial implementation costs and job displacement concerns. Barrick and Komatsu are committed to innovation that drives meaningful change, which could potentially boost investor confidence and market positioning [1].

In addition to this partnership, Barrick and Komatsu have a new agreement for primary mining equipment for Barrick’s Reko Diq copper and gold project in Pakistan starting in 2026. Valued at $440 million, this deal underscores the strengthening partnership between the two companies [1].
