- AXTI's stock rebounded ~9.7% to $61.64, testing its 50-day moving average near $63 after hitting the 200-day floor at $54.50.

- The 50-day level at $63 acts as critical resistance/support; a close above it would validate the AI supply-chain story's resilience.

- Options data shows extreme volatility (100%+ implied) and heavy call buying (put/call ratio 0.30), signaling speculative momentum over fundamentals.

- Institutional flow remains balanced, but a sustained close below $54.50 would structurally break the year-long uptrend from $3 to $143.

- The next 1-2 sessions will determine if this bounce is a healthy correction or the start of a broken trade in AI optical infrastructure.

The AI substrate stock down ~57% from its high snapped back nearly 10% today. It is now pinned between its 200-day floor and 50-day ceiling, and the level that separates a healthy pullback from a broken trade is about one handle above.

AXT (AXTI) is up about 9.7% to $61.64 as of mid-session Monday, climbing off an open near $57.69 and a low of $56.01. That reversal matters less for its size than for where it happened: the stock fell to the edge of its 200-day moving average around $54.60, held it, and has now run straight into its 50-day average near $63. In a name whose sessions routinely swing more than 10%, the direction of these two walls is the entire story.

The stock that went from a 52-week low near $3 to an all-time high around $143 is still up roughly 277% year to date, even after a violent correction that has shaved more than half off the highs. The debate is not whether the AI optical story is real — it is — but whether this pullback is a pause in a monster uptrend or the start of a broken trade.

Why this chart has room to argue

AXTI makes compound semiconductor substrates — indium phosphide, gallium arsenide, and germanium — that sit at the center of the AI data-center optical buildout. Indium phosphide, or InP, is the material feeding the lasers and transceivers that haul data in and out of accelerators. In the second quarter it delivered record revenue of $47.6 million, up 164% from a year earlier, and swung to a profit. Management has said it expects InP revenue to triple by the end of 2026 and is doubling capacity. A long-term supply-and-capacity agreement with Lumentum, backed by up to $87.5 million in deposits, gave the demand story a named customer with money down.

None of that is new this week. What is new is that after mid-August, the entire InP supply chain took a profit-taking hit — AXT fell more than 12% on August 28 alone — and this stock has been replaying its run in reverse. The question the chart puts to the tape is whether the sellers who did the damage are done, or whether today's bounce is just another blip in a downtrend.

The line that matters: $63

Everything now runs through the 50-day moving average near $63. Today's high poked to $62.50 — essentially a kiss of that ceiling — on heavy volume, about 10.9 million shares traded. A daily close back above $63 would flip that average from resistance back to support, validate the 200-day hold, and hand control to buyers with a vacuum overhead where the collapse left little standing supply. Below the 200-day at roughly $54.50, the chart offers no natural shelf until far lower, and the longer-term uptrend that survived every selloff this year would be structurally broken.

Traders may be missing how much this is being decided by options and momentum rather than by a fresh catalyst. The options market is pricing extreme uncertainty — implied volatility above 100% — and the day's option flow is heavily tilted to calls, with a put/call volume ratio near 0.30. That is fuel for a squeeze once $63 breaks, but it is also a reminder that the move that brought this stock to $143 and back was speculation, not just fundamentals. Meanwhile the tape shows no one-sided institutional stampede: block and large-order flow are nearly balanced in and out, meaning today's rebound is broad and retail-heavy rather than a verified sponsorship signal.

The scoreboard

ScenarioTriggerPathInvalidation
Bull resumeClose back above $63Higher into the empty zone toward the upper-$70s breakdown regionLose $63 on a close
Bear continuationRejection at $63Drift lower to retest the $54.50 200-dayDaily close below $54.50

The setup has a clear clock too: price is no longer near its trigger in either direction. At $61.64 it sits just under the wall, so tomorrow's open and the next couple of closes resolve it quickly. A fade back below $56, toward the 200-day, would signal the bounce was a dead-cat — a trap for the late buyer who chased today's green bar.

Hold $63 and the correction looks like a violent but healthy pause in a genuine AI supply-chain story; lose $54.50 and the momentum architecture that lifted a $3 stock to $143 is gone. The wall has been reached. The close over the next session or two decides which side of this trade is trapped.

Everything leaves a footprint. The chart already knows.
