Axie Infinity Unveils Atia’s Legacy MMO Game Amid Positive NFT Outlook
Axie Infinity, a prominent player in the Web3 gaming sector, has unveiled plans for a new game, Atia’s Legacy, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game set within the Axie universe. This announcement comes as the outlook for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is becoming increasingly positive, with growing interest and adoption across various sectors. The new game is expected to leverage blockchain technology, offering players unique experiences and opportunities for digital ownership.
On November 25, Sky Mavis, the developer behind Axie Infinity, announced its plans to release a new game set in the world of Axie Infinity. This announcement coincided with company layoffs, which freed up resources for several projects slated for 2025. Sky Mavis co-founder and CEO Trung Nguyen mentioned that one of these projects was the “new Axie game.” On March 6, Sky Mavis released a trailer for Atia’s Legacy, providing a sneak peek into the game. The team described it as “the next chapter” in the Axie universe, emphasizing the continued empowerment of players with true asset ownership.
The trailer showcased significant improvements over the initial iteration of Axie Infinity, which featured two-dimensional Axies performing turn-based combat. The new game introduces 3D combat, mini-games such as solving puzzles and catching fish, and its own farming simulator. Sky Mavis has incorporated everything learned over the past seven years of building and powering Web3 games into this project. If all goes according to plan, the company will open up “play-tests” where users can test the game in 2025.
To attract players, Sky Mavis has deployed a referral program. Users who successfully refer their friends to play will receive the game’s native tokens, Axie Infinity (AXS), as a reward. The more gamers onboarded, the more tokens will be unlocked. The company plans to ship a playable minimum viable product featuring squad-based combat, unified progression, player-versus-environment interactions, resource and crafting systems, and social interactions. However, a specific timeline for the game's release has not been provided.
These developments in blockchain gaming come as the outlook for NFTs continues to improve. The US has begun to shift its approach toward NFTs, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropping its investigation on the NFT marketplace OpenSea on February 22.
