Sky Mavis, the company behind the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity, has accused Seed Go, a game developed on the
blockchain, of infringing on its intellectual property. The allegation was made by Alexander Larsen, co-founder of Axie Infinity and Sky Mavis, who took to Twitter to express his concerns. Larsen tagged Mysten Labs, the developers behind Sui, and its co-founders, urging them to address the issue to avoid further complications.Seed Go, also known as Seed, is a game that features pastel blob-like
characters called "Seedmon," which players can breed. The game also has its own tokens, SLOVE and SEED, and is accessible as a Telegram mini-app. The similarities between Seed Go and Axie Infinity, which also features pastel blob-like NFT creatures called "Axies" that players can breed and use to battle each other, have raised eyebrows in the crypto gaming community.Jeffrey "Jiho" Zirlin, another co-founder of Sky Mavis, compared Seed Go to "Axie at home," referencing a popular meme that compares a bland, homemade meal to a more desirable takeout option. This comparison highlights the perceived similarities between the two games and the potential for confusion among players.
Sky Mavis has informed the Sui team of the alleged infringement and is seeking to resolve the issue outside of court. A spokesperson for Sky Mavis confirmed this, stating that the company is looking to address the matter amicably. The Sui Foundation, which had previously invested in Seed, distanced itself from the project, emphasizing that it does not currently support Seed and has high standards for the projects it endorses. Mysten Labs, the developer behind Sui, was also not involved in the game's development but helped set up Sui smart contracts to connect the Telegram game to Sui.
The allegations of copyright infringement come as Axie Infinity continues to make waves in the crypto gaming world. The game, which was launched in 2018, has generated over $1.3 billion in total revenue since its inception. The controversy surrounding Seed Go highlights the importance of intellectual property protection in the rapidly evolving world of blockchain gaming. As more games and platforms emerge, it will be crucial for developers to ensure that their creations are original and do not infringe on the rights of others.
