Arm Holdings has introduced its latest mobile chip design architecture, Lumex, which is specifically optimized for artificial intelligence (AI). This new architecture is designed to support AI functionalities on mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches, even when these devices are offline and not connected to the internet. The Lumex series includes four different types of chip designs, each catering to various performance needs. These range from lower-performance, high-efficiency versions suitable for smartwatches and other
, to high-performance versions aimed at high-end smartphones that can run large AI models without relying on cloud computing resources. The high-performance version of the Lumex architecture is particularly notable for its ability to support devices running AI-driven software, enabling local deployment and operation of AI functions. This development underscores the growing expectation among users for devices to have built-in AI capabilities. The senior vice president and general manager highlighted that AI is becoming a core component of mobile experiences, from real-time interactions to AI translation applications. The Lumex design is part of Arm's Compute Subsystems (CSS) business unit, which provides ready-to-use technology solutions for mobile manufacturers and chip designers. This unit aims to help these companies quickly integrate new technologies into their products, reducing research and development cycles.
Arm is also focusing on creating more comprehensive chip design solutions for data centers and mobile devices, as part of its long-term strategy to diversify revenue streams in the smartphone market and other sectors. Additionally,
has plans to invest more in developing its own chip technology and has already recruited key technical talent to drive this initiative. The Lumex architecture is optimized for 3-nanometer process technology, a cutting-edge manufacturing process supplied by companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This technology is also used in the latest series of iPhone chips released by . The senior vice president and general manager also mentioned that Arm will host a dedicated launch event for the Lumex architecture in China, underscoring the strategic importance of the Chinese market, where many of the world's leading smartphone manufacturers are based.
