Argentina Seeks Interpol Red Notice for LIBRA Crypto Scandal Figure
Argentina has taken a significant step in the LIBRA crypto scandal by requesting an Interpol Red Notice for Hayden Davis, the alleged central figure behind the token's collapse. Argentine lawyer Gregorio Dalbon submitted the petition to prosecutor Eduardo Taiano and Judge María Servini, seeking Davis’s international detention and extradition from the U.S. Dalbon's argument is based on Davis's financial resources and foreign residence, which pose a flight risk.
The LIBRA token, which was backed by President Javier Milei, experienced a dramatic collapse shortly after its launch. This event has led to substantial financial losses for retail investors and has sparked political controversy. Prosecutor Eduardo Taiano previously froze approximately $110 million in crypto linked to the case, highlighting the severity of the financial implications.
The collapse of the LIBRA token has had far-reaching consequences. Retail investors suffered devastating losses of $251 million, while wallets associated with Davis and another key figure, Kelsier, siphoned off significant profits before the token’s downfall. Blockchain analysis firm Nansen reported that market manipulation tactics, such as "sniping," were used to control liquidity and stabilize the market. However, these tactics ultimately backfired, leaving retail investors with heavy losses while insiders made substantial gains.
The political fallout from the LIBRA token’s collapse has been significant. President Milei publicly endorsed the project before its value dropped sharply, leading to widespread criticism and controversy. Investigations have also linked the LIBRA team to other controversial crypto projects, including MELANIA, another digital asset. Additionally, there are reports of discussions between the LIBRA team and the Nigerian government about launching a similar token, raising concerns about potential exploitative crypto ventures across multiple countries.
The broader crypto industry has also felt the impact of the LIBRA scandal. Ben Chow, co-founder of decentralized finance platform Meteora, recently resigned amid the controversy. The fallout has led to major shake-ups within the industry, highlighting the need for greater regulation and oversight.
If Dalbon’s request for a Red Notice is approved, Interpol will distribute it to its 195 member countries. Although a Red Notice does not compel arrests, it notifies law enforcement agencies globally that Davis is wanted for extradition. This move underscores the international scope of the LIBRA scandal and the efforts to hold those responsible accountable.
The LIBRA token continues to decline in value, reflecting the ongoing turmoil and lack of investor confidence. As the scandal unfolds, its impact on Argentina’s political and financial landscape remains significant, with potential repercussions for the broader crypto industry. The request for an Interpol Red Notice marks a critical step in the legal proceedings, aiming to bring justice to the affected investors and restore stability to the market.
