The same gap between traffic and value repeats on the mainnet, only with real stakes attached. Transactions are how a layer-1 describes its activity, but they are a flimsy proxy for value when the network earns almost nothing per transaction and stores the resulting state at its own expense. A chain that processes more transactions on its throwaway testnet than on its paid network is not demonstrating that people keep coming back; it is demonstrating that running is easy and being paid is hard.

None of this argues Aptos is broken. It has a serious engineering team and genuinely fast throughput. But the reset is a useful reminder of what the milestone it is celebrating actually measures — and a test you can run on any "X billion transactions" headline you see next. Ask whether the activity was paid or subsidized, testnet or mainnet, and how much of the resulting fee revenue the network actually keeps. When the answer to all three is "very little," the transactions are a story about attention, not about a business. The foundation for the "busiest chain" narrative is a cost line that is now scheduled for deletion.
