Applied Materials Trading Volume Ranks 53rd as Company Expands Joint Lab with CEA-Leti for Specialty Semiconductors

Applied Materials and CEA-Leti have announced an expansion of their joint lab to drive innovation in specialty semiconductors. This collaboration aims to address emerging infrastructure challenges in AI data centers by developing materials engineering solutions. The joint lab will focus on device innovations for chipmakers serving ICAPS markets, which include IoT, Communications, Automotive, Power, and Sensors. These specialty chips are crucial for managing data and power distribution within data centers, and the growing demands in AI infrastructure highlight the need for more energy-efficient computing solutions.

The expanded lab will feature new equipment and capabilities, including full-flow development of specialty devices and advanced packaging tools. This will support the heterogeneous integration of chips across different wafer types and process nodes, enabling new classes of specialty devices for various next-generation applications. The facility will also strengthen the chipmaking ecosystem in France by expanding the technology hub in Grenoble, a leading site for collaborative innovation across government, academia, and industry.

Aninda Moitra, corporate vice president and general manager of Applied Materials’ ICAPS business, emphasized the long history of successful collaboration between the two organizations. He noted that their combined expertise will foster breakthroughs and push the boundaries of semiconductor innovation, contributing to sustainable advancements in critical applications for the AI era. Sébastian Dauvé, CEO of CEA-Leti, highlighted the importance of the first phase of the expanded collaboration in addressing materials-engineering challenges of specialty semiconductor devices. The joint lab’s new focus on energy-efficient solutions for AI data-center infrastructure reflects their shared commitment to technological progress that meets both industrial and societal needs.
