Apple's Bold Leap: Redefining Smart Homes and AR with Innovative Vision Products
Apple's ambitious foray into new product lines aims to reshape the technological landscape, as the company launches a comprehensive strategy for smart home devices while advancing its augmented reality initiatives. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is prioritizing smart home hardware as a key development focus over the next two years. This includes supporting the Matter smart home standard, integrating Apple Intelligence, and developing a new homeOS operating system. By adopting the Matter protocol, Apple devices will be compatible with those from Amazon and Google, enhancing their cross-device functionality.
On the hardware front, Apple is working on a smart speaker with a display and a high-end tabletop device. In parallel, the Vision Products Group is developing at least four new devices: a budget-friendly Vision Pro, a second-generation Vision Pro, smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, and AirPods equipped with cameras. The affordable Vision Pro, anticipated for a 2025 release, is expected to cost around $2000, featuring less powerful processors and more economical materials, omitting the EyeSight feature. A quicker chip-equipped second-generation Vision Pro is planned for 2026.
Despite its previous attempts in smart home products not achieving substantial market success, Apple's new approach involves a broader ecosystem. By supporting third-party device compatibility through Matter, and integrating AI for advanced device control, Apple looks to capitalize on a market where its competitors, Amazon and Google, also seek dominance. Apple Intelligence is set to elevate home automation, allowing precise control of applications and devices.
Additionally, Apple plans to launch a smart speaker with a screen that can facilitate video calls, browse the web, and access apps, providing a more accessible price point. The company also hopes to achieve a leadership position in the market with upcoming innovations that combine home monitoring and audiovisual experience in a high-end device. While Apple's past smart home devices like the HomePod didn't meet expectations, the market openness presents a renewed opportunity for the tech giant.
Apple's strategic expansion also aims to counter Meta with its upcoming budget-friendly Vision products. By halving prices, the company expects to double the sales of its Vision Pro headsets and plans further innovation in AR/VR segments. As Apple ramps up its AI endeavors, it plans to redefine its ecosystem, leveraging its technological strengths to reclaim leadership in enduringly competitive sectors.
