Apple Remains 'Silent' On AI Updates: Is It Falling Behind or Preparing to Surprise?

A few days ago, the launch of OpenAI's new model Sora officially fired the first shot of the AI competition in 2024, as this new text-to-video tool can create realistic scenes and characters containing rich details based on text instructions and can use multiple camera angles to generate continuous 60-second videos.

Meanwhile, Google also released the new generation multimodal large model Gemini 1.5 Pro. According to Google, Gemini's performance has now reached the million level, and it can have an overwhelming advantage over OpenAI's latest GPT-4 Turbo.

Also, Elon Musk, who always likes to comment on hot events, is eager to show his presence, even though his xAI seems not to have anything outstanding to show.

Tesla has been able to do real-world video generation with accurate physics for about a year, but it wasn't super interesting, the world's richest man wrote when discussing Sora with netizens.

Musk emphasized that since his crews have been short on training computers for FSD, so they weren't able to continue the training, but they will do it later this year when we have some spare capacity.

While OpenAI and Google are busy showing off to each other and Musk is wildly firing blanks on social media, Apple, a company often seen as a trendsetter in technology, is once again unusually quiet.

So far, Apple has not revealed much information about its AI plans to the outside world - recent rumors suggest that Apple is developing an AI programming tool for generating code.

However, in comparison with peers who frequently release large models with tens of thousands of Tokens, occasionally buy AI chips at sky-high prices, or frequently announce new AI features, Apple's progress in AI is somewhat insignificant.

This has also raised concerns among many investors.

Apple hasn't publicly talked about its AI efforts in detail, and concerns have been around the company... lagging other tech giants in the race., Citi analyst Atif Malik wrote in his report.

At the close on Friday, Apple's stock fell another 0.8% and has fallen nearly 2% so far this year. Although this decline hasn't caused any substantial damage to Apple's stock price, it contrasts sharply with the stock price trends of tech companies that have already boosted benefits through AI or are preparing to benefit from this technology, such as Nvidia and Meta.

Therefore, for Apple, this year's mid-year developer conference may be more important than ever - this may be a great opportunity for the company to reverse its current disadvantage and boost investor confidence. It may even be the company's last chance to ride the AI wind.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote in a recent research report: We believe the Super Bowl moment for Apple will be when Cook & Co. finally take the covers off the generative AI technology being worked on in the labs of Apple Park and introduce it to developers and consumers at WWDC in June followed by the exclusive AI features we expect to be included on iPhone 16.

Malik also believes the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) may mark the announcement of various Apple AI tools.

In addition, Apple's executives have hinted the outside world multiple times: CEO Tim Cook said in the company's recent earnings call that the company is investing in this technology and will make an announcement later this year. The company's vice president in charge of software engineering, Craig Federighi, has also asked his team to develop as many AI features as possible in this year's iOS version upgrade.

However, these executives did not reveal Apple's direction of AI research, and outsiders are mostly speculating that Apple's investment in artificial intelligence will mainly revolve around the AI-driven version of the exclusive phone assistant Siri.

Apple has yet to respond to outside speculation and comments.
