Apple has reclaimed its position in the top five smartphone vendors in China, buoyed by the release of the iPhone 16 series. Despite a slight decline in iPhone sales during the third quarter, the launch of the new AI-integrated iPhone 16 has invigorated consumer interest, allowing Apple to regain market share that had been lost temporarily.

In the third quarter, market research data from IDC indicated Apple held a 15.6% share in China, a minor decrease from the previous year. Huawei closely followed with a 15.3% share, reflecting a growing competitive landscape. According to Counterpoint, the iPhone 16 series outperformed expectations, with sales up 20% compared to the iPhone 15 in 2023, particularly boosting Apple's presence in the high-end segment.

The surge in iPhone 16 sales is attributed in part to aggressive promotional activities and the anticipation of Apple's new AI functionalities. This momentum is expected to sustain as Apple plans further marketing efforts and product enhancements. The early success of iPhone 16 signals a potential revival in sales, particularly in its Pro and Pro Max models, which saw a 44% increase in sales over their predecessors.

However, the Chinese market remains a challenging environment for Apple due to strong competition from domestic manufacturers like Huawei and Vivo, both of whom continue to offer compelling alternatives. Despite this, the iPhone's robust opening weeks reflect a resilient demand for Apple's innovative technologies, even as certain AI features are not yet available locally.

As Apple navigates these dynamics, the company's focus on integrating advanced AI capabilities into its new models may drive further interest and sales. With a projected increase in demand for AI-smartphones globally, Apple appears well-positioned for continued growth in China and beyond.
