Apple to Launch Foldable iPhone in 2026 Using Samsung Display Technology

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, according to a note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The tech giant is reportedly adopting Samsung Display’s “crease-free display solution” instead of developing its own design. This decision comes after years of speculation and development, with Apple’s first flexible-display patents dating back to 2014. The foldable iPhone is anticipated to feature a display that can be folded and unfolded, offering a larger screen size when needed, similar to other foldable phones on the market.

The success of foldable phones hinges on the quality and durability of the hinge mechanism. Samsung, which has been a pioneer in foldable phone technology, has faced challenges with its own designs, notably with the Galaxy Fold, which had issues with debris entering the hinge and damaging the display. Despite these setbacks, Samsung has continued to improve its foldable phone designs, making them sturdier and more reliable. Apple’s decision to use Samsung Display’s technology suggests a recognition of Samsung’s expertise in this area.

According to Kuo, Fine M-Tech, a supplier of display metal plates, will expand its production capacity in Vietnam to support Apple’s foldable iPhone production. The first shipments are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with an estimated 13-15 million units to be produced next year. Apple is reportedly implementing stricter crease-free display requirements, including laser drilling, to enhance the durability and resistance of the foldable display.

This is not the first time Apple has relied on Samsung for key components. Despite their competitive relationship, Samsung Display was the exclusive supplier of the OLED screen for the iPhone X in 2017. Additionally, Apple has been known to source chips from Samsung’s subsidiaries for memory and storage in its iPhones. Kuo’s latest note also outlines Apple’s iPhone pipeline from 2025 to 2027, predicting the release of several new models, including the iPhone Foldable in fall 2026.

The bill of materials for Apple’s foldable iPhone is estimated to be around $750, which would allow it to price the phone in the $1,800-$2,000 range, similar to Samsung’s foldable phones. Apple has not commented on these reports, maintaining its policy of secrecy regarding future products. The launch of the foldable iPhone is expected to be a significant milestone for Apple, as it enters the foldable phone market with a design that leverages Samsung’s technology while aiming to address the challenges faced by previous foldable devices.
